Consent for the

2017-18 School Year

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Your child is being asked to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) sponsored by the California Department of Education. This is a very important survey that will help promote better health and wellbeing among our youth, improve the school learning environment and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence. Your child does not have to take the survey. If you do not want your child to complete the survey, you must notify your school.

Survey Content. The survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning; school safety; and health-related concerns such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; and risk of depression and suicide and perceived sexual orientation. It includes questions about “sexual behavior and practices leading to HIV/ AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy.”

The results from this survey are compiled into district and county-level CHKS Reports. To view a copy of your district’s Report go to http://chks.wested.org/reports/search (Outside Source) and type in the district name.

It is Voluntary. Students who, with your permission, agree to participate do not have to answer any questions they do not want to answer, and may stop taking the survey at any time.

It is Anonymous. No names are recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. The results will be made available for analysis only under strict confidentiality controls.

Administration. The survey will be administered between now and February 28, 2018. It will take about one class period to complete (about 50 minutes) and will be administered in one of your child’s classes.

Potential Risks. There are no known risks of physical harm to your child. Risks of psychological or social harm are very small. None have been reported in 14 years of survey administration. In rare instances, some discomfort might be experienced from the questions. The school’s counseling services will be available to answer any personal questions that may materialize.

For Further Information. The survey was developed by WestEd, a public, non-profit educational institution. If you have any questions about this survey, or about your rights, call Terri Elkin 337-7119.

If you do not give permission for your child to participate in the survey, please download the attached file, sign and return it to the school.

We are very happy to see lots of students riding their bikes to school even during the winter months! We know bikes need a lot of maintenance and that’s why we’ve invited the Safe Routes to Schools BikeMobile to provide free tune ups for all parents, students and teachers at our school!

If your bike or your child’s bike is making one of those mystery sounds or collecting dust because it has a flat tire, bring it to school on Wednesday, Dec. 6th between 1:30-3:30.  The BikeMobile can fix flat tires, adjust brakes and gears, and even replace broken or worn out parts like chains, seats, and tires. The only thing it can’t do is replace missing wheels or gears. While the mechanics work on your bike they’ll explain how it works and how to keep it running smooth.

Bike or no bike, everyone is welcome to attend to learn about maintenance, safety, and more! This is a first come, first serve event. We can only guarantee to fix the first 20 bikes that sign up, so please come early!

Would you like to help staff the event? We welcome parent volunteers who want to help with signups and repairs. To signup as a volunteer and to learn more about our great program log onto www.bike-mobile.org or contact psmith@alamedacountysr2s.org.

This service is offered through the Alameda County Transportation Commission’s Safe Routes To Schools program and is staffed by Local Motion.

The final modernization meeting will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Media Center.  The final modernization meeting could potentially include the following changes:

  • A one-way locking gate on East Shore entrance.
  • A one-way locking gate on the pathway at the end of the Nature Area.
  • The current gates/fence to the school (next to room 605 and 701) will be closed during the school day, so the only way to get on campus is going through the new office.
  • Room 715 becoming a Science lab.
  • The computer lab moved to another room.
  • A new entrance to room 701.
  • The office area and supply room being moved to Room 604 and 605.
  • The music class being moved to room 901 with the entrance to the class moved to the yard side of the building.
  • Room 901 will move into the office area.
  • The staff room will be opened up to include the supply room.
  • CEC class will be moved to another classroom.

If you want to find out more information or hear for yourself about the final modernization plan, please attend this very important meeting.  This will be our last opportunity to say how Lincoln Middle School feels about the modernization plan before it goes to the School Board.  Please plan to attend!

Over the weekend there was considerable talk on social media about a former AUSD student who visited Lincoln Middle School last week and made some disturbing comments. The Alameda Police Department (APD) has investigated the incidents and interviewed the former student. Please see this joint statement from APD, AUSD, and the City of Alameda for details. The statement is also attached to this email.

All current 6th and 7th graders enrolled at LMS (and their parents) are eligible to enroll in the 2019 Spring Break trip to Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. I have been leading tours for LMS kids and their families since 1995, taking well over 1100 Lincoln Lions down the eastern seaboard and then all over the world to 13 different countries. If space permits later, 8th grade students may enroll.

The first meeting will be on Tuesday, November 7 at 7:00 pm in the LMS Media Center. I will go over the itinerary, educational value, cost and how a group tour works. This is a great value as we will see a lot of amazing historical sites, visit a few universities, and even take in a Broadway show.

Students who may be interested should plan to come to Mrs. Moody's classroom, Room 805, at the lunch detention bell on November 7 to see if they are interested in participating in this trip. Enrollment will start after the meeting on Nov. 7. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. The trip will fill up, so don't miss that meeting!

The Lincoln Middle School musicians looked so great and performed so well at all the events on our 2017 Anaheim Tour last week.Their music performances at the 3 elementary schools in Garden Grove were spectacular!

Our Lincoln musicians performed parades and outdoor concerts for many excited students at Leo Carrillo Elementary, Rosita Elementary and Murdy Elementary.     Our Lincoln musicians shined so brightly as they led Mickey's Soundsational Parade down Main Street at Disneyland last Thursday afternoon!

The performances of our 3 groups at the Anaheim Music in the Parks Festival Competition was an AMAZING display of all the talented musicians at Lincoln! We competed with schools from Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California. We brought home 4 beautiful trophies for our school, the Alameda Unified School District and our community of Alameda that proudly represent all our hard work and strong musicianship.  The trophies are proudly displayed on the front counter in the school office.

For the first time ever, the Lincoln Middle School Full Orchestra competed in the Music in the Parks Festival  receiving the FIRST PLACE AWARD TROPHY in the middle school full orchestra category with a rating of EXCELLENT!

The Lincoln Middle School String Orchestra received the FIRST PLACE AWARD TROPHY in the  middle school string orchestra category with a rating of SUPERIOR!

The Lincoln Symphonic Band received the FIRST PLACE AWARD TROPHY in the middle school  concert band category with a rating of SUPERIOR!

The Lincoln Symphonic Band also received the TOP TROPHY AWARD presented at the Music in the Parks Festival:the BEST OVERALL MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT BAND in the Anaheim Music in the Parks Festival.

The entire Anaheim Trip displayed a continuous stream of fabulous, musical playing by our young Lincoln musicians everywhere they appeared! We are so PROUD of their hard work and beautiful musicianship!

Join your friends, or make new ones, reach out to your neighbors, form a bike train-- hop on and pedal! Each year more and more schools join the celebration and fun of using pedal power to get to and from school. Bike commuting is good for our health, the community, and the planet. Be part of the solution!

With thousands of riders pedaling on Bike to School and Work Day, it's one of the best days to try out cycling with your family: there's safety in numbers. Energizer Stations are in place to congratulate your efforts and help give a boost to your day! Treats and goodies await you at the base of the Bay Farm bike bridge and the corner of Encinal and High St.

At Lincoln, Safe Routes to Schools Champions will be greeting riders with blight stickers, pencils, maps, snacks and high fives!. After dropping off your children you can enjoy continuing your commute to work.  Check out other Bike to Work activities at https://bikeeastbay.org/events/bike-work-day-2017, there is a lot going on, and it just begins with your journey to school/work.

Don't forget, children under 18 must wear a helmet it's the law! Be a role model and wear your helmet, too! If you have questions please contact me through School Loop.

See you at the bike racks.

There has been a number of calls to the office concerning Math placement for students next year. We are in the process of waiting for the district to provide a Math Matrix which is based on multiple measures so we can make our school’s recommendations. All current 6th and 7th graders will be notified in the next two weeks what math class we recommend for next year. For those students who qualify for Algebra, we will have an Algebra information night May 3rd at 6:30 PM in the Multi-Use Room. Students and their families will have until Monday, May 8th to make their final decision if they are going to accelerate into Algebra or remain on the grade level pace for Math placement.

Things to Remember During Spring Break…

6th Grade Families… Spring Break is a perfect time to get those Tdap immunizations that are needed for 7th grade next year! This will keep you from a delay in receiving your class schedule for next year during orientation day. If you don’t get the Tdap, you will not be able to attend the first day of school.

8th Grade Permission Slips…. We have been receiving quite a bit of permission slips for the end of the year activities. Permission slips and money returned by Friday , April 14th will pay an “early bird” price of $75 After that date, the price goes up to $85 until Friday, May 12th. After Friday, the price will go up to $105. Money will NOT be accepted after May 31, 2017.

8th Grade Community Service Hours… All 8th Graders are required to complete 20 hours of community service. The sooner the better. So be sure to get those hours collected and turned in! All community service hours are due by May 26th. If you are short on hours, come by the office and sign up for “Go Green” at lunch. A whole week equals 2.5 hours of service.

AUSD Teachers, Parents/Guardians, and Students-

Following community interest in reviewing district homework policies and practices, AUSD is convening a homework workgroup.  This workgroup will meet monthly beginning in April 2017 (no meetings will be held during the months of July/August) and will bring together representatives from multiple stakeholder groups including teachers, parents/guardians, students, and other district personnel.  This process will continue into the 2017-18 academic school year.

The workgroup will focus on the following activities:

  1. Gather data and conduct analysis of the homework experience in AUSD
    1. Survey teachers, students, and families to examine their views and experiences with homework
    2. Review site homework policies to assess alignment across sites, consistency within sites, and adherence to stated district and site policies
    3. Review research summaries and examples of policies from other districts
  2. Develop policy recommendations to be presented to the Superintendent.

If you are interested in participating in the Homework Workgroup, the application can be found at the following link: http://www.alameda.k12.ca.us/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1489395260052

Reminder to ALL 6th grade parents

T-dap Booster

Required for 7th grade

ALL 7th graders are REQUIRED to get the Tdap vaccine prior to registration for 7th grade. To avoid a rush and risk your child not being able to attend school, please check that your 6th grader has received their Tdap vaccine.

Please schedule your child’s appointment now.

(This 4 day weekend or the upcoming Spring Break

is a great time to get it without missing class time)

A couple of recommendations for locations for the Tdap:

· Your child’s primary care physician/pediatrician

· Some pharmacies offer the Tdap-call pharmacy to check for cost

· Some urgent care facilities offer the Tdap-call the facility to check for cost

Once your child has received the vaccine, please send the immunization confirmation A.S.A.P. to your school health office.

Thank you for your attention to this very important vaccine.

Hello to Parents of 8th Graders,

The 8th grade advancement program is a series of events that happen at the end of the year. It's an unforgettable time for these students as they celebrate the end of their middle school career and it's chock full of memorable and fun activities. It takes a bit of help to pull all of the events off and it's important to have many hands.  If you are interested in helping with the 8th grade advancement activities, please let Cindy Zecher know. Her email address is czecher@alameda.k12.ca.us.
